Coral Toxicity Test of Coral Isles Sunscreen
Sun protection should feel great on your skin—without compromising the health of our oceans and marine life. We had already removed all the ingredients from our formulas that may cause an issue, but we wanted to ensure that NOTHING in our formulas would harm coral.
We contacted a European FDA Certified Lab (HelioScience) that specializes in Aquatic Impact studies. We had our strongest Coral Isles SPF 50 lotion formula tested. We knew that our SPF 50 formula would be the most difficult to pass this very rigorous test on live coral.
What the Test Results Revealed
No Coral Bleaching
Coral bleaching was not observed under any of the testing conditions, including both short-term and extended exposure.
Tested at Multiple Levels
Evaluated at high concentrations (100 mg/L)—far exceeding typical ocean exposure levels—and realistic conditions (5 mg/L).
Short + Long-Term Exposure
Tested over 72 hours and extended to 14 days* to evaluate both immediate and longer-term effects on coral response.
Third-Party Verified
Tests conducted by independent marine science labs, Helioscience and Planktovie, using live Montipora foliosa coral.
* This is an especially high concentration and much greater than what live coral typically encounter in natural real-world conditions—making this a significant benchmark for evaluating bleaching response.
